Microsoft finally prices Windows correctly.

I think the pricing is the smartest thing Microsoft has done in a long time- free upgrade for a year after release will keep them from having to maintain support as long as they did with XP- if the large scale corporate licenses have the same pricing, businesses are going to tend to upgrade.
They do have to do something- while Windows is the dominant OS on the desktop, when you look at all "computing devices", the figure I have seen lately is around 15%.
My problem is MS is trying to put in an OS things that can be done on app level- the Chrome browser is an example- Chrome is synced across my Windows install, my iOS devices and my Linux boxes, and I can easily log in on my Dad's iMac and create an account which will sync on it.

Some of the new UI stuff looks pretty good- the holographic stuff looks killer, but I'm still waiting on the revolutionary file system that was promised for Vista, but still has not arrived. Other than the holographic stuff, everything else is simple copying of features that have been around for years for OSX and Linux- on Linux the core OS is very much separate from the desktop environment, and all of it is infinitely tweakable, offering actions and features that Windows still hasn't caught up with.

the biggest problem is bloat

M$ wants to be All things to Everybody, Across all hardware platforms
this is a Near Impossible task

I would love a Lean OS, that lets you add Modules
something that i could customize to my tasks and hardware
imagine how fast a 64 bit Version of win 2000, would be, with out all the win 8 bloat

and NO..i don't want to start over with Linux, my video editing software does not work with Linux

It looks like Windows 7 but the metro interface is there if you want to use it with a touch screen.

I'm pretty sure we'll have to get DW a new laptop this year. I was hoping her current one would last until Windows 10 is released but now I don't have to worry.

From what I saw in a PC mag article on Win 10 with photos of the beta preview, the screen is back to looking like Win 7 with a start menu like Win 7.

I recently got a Win 8.1 laptop and the first thing that it did when once I got it started was update itself to "Win 8.1 Update" which is the current Win 8/8.1 version of Windows and the one that MS will continue to support - announcing that they will not support Win 8 or the original 8.1 in a few months.

Win 8.1 or Win 8.1 Update started out confusing (I have been using and programming computers since mainframes with paper tape memory readers and punch cards) as to where to access the software I was uploading, etc. The Start page is actually a large start menu that is just a big version of the start menu. I also found ways to change settings so that the computer always boots to Desktop and also how to bypass the now required password. There are things about Win 8.1 that I don't like and at the top of that is that Windows updating cannot be turned off - it can be limited to just essential updates but unlike Win 7 and apparently the original Win 8 there is no way to turn off updates (other than App updates). I like to update when I want to and not when the computer decides. Then I found out a couple of nights ago when I decided I better back up the whole thing and use my True Image to create a full back up, that True Image installed and opened just fine but could not find my C drive. It did find the USB portable drive and the SD card in the laptop - but no Drive 1 or Drive 0 - the C drive. This completely baffled me. I then learned searching around that only True Image 2014 with a limited time update and True Image 2015 works on Win 8 and 8.1. I am not going out to buy a new version of True Image so I found a freeware backup with good reviews. I am still wondering what MS did to hide the hard drive from back up software.

Right now I have Win 8.1 Update running almost like Win 7 without any added overlay software. It does boot really fast. With a little effort it can be made to work - but I know that I have other software (business software mostly) that it is not going to run. MS has also made it Android/IOS unfriendly and I have not found ways to make Windows Apps play nice with Google apps. There are also many apps that exist for Android and IOS that have no app versions for Windows.

If Win 10 is an improvement - and it is straight forward download the free update and you have a full OS with no strings attached, I will update. I will leave Win 7 running on my desktop PC and I still have a second desktop that still runs happily on XP.
