Sounds to me like the brakes are dragging. Self-adjusting is only as useful as it is accurate. The hubs should be warm after a trip, but not hot.
To test, jack to get each wheel off the ground and see how easily it turns. Should spin freely. If not, if there is resistance, brakes are mis-adjusted, "self-adjusting" be hanged.
