I occassionaly check mine at refueling stops. Hot bearings can be isolated from hot brakes by a highway drive followed by one brake application coming to a stop. One normal brake application wont get the wheel that hot.
Heavy in-town driving mine will get too hot to hold my fingers on for more than a second, highway driving they are more than warm but not too hot to hold fingers on. Mine are not always perfectly equal in temp between sides, and never been too concerned about it.
