I used needle nose pliers on mine and wiggled it back and forth about an 1/8 in at a time. It took a long time to get it out due to rust in the holder. If I remember correctly I also had to pry up on the bottom with another tool at the same time. Before I installed the new element I cleaned the holder with steel wool and emery paper. The new one went in easy. Don't be afraid to apply force are going to throw the old one away anyway.
