flexible solar panel on the horizon?

Hi all,

I'd love to replace my awning with this material:

renovagen

  • Have 4 unisolar glued to my roof. IMHO, they are great. Excellent low light low angle production....total about 400 watts...

2 foot by 7 foot, 60 watts, rollable ... how long is the average 15 foot awning?
only fit five of those across, 300w not too impressive. 4ft x 7ft glass panel (390 watt) would beat that and might fit on some roofs.

Unisolar - 22 sq.ft, 136W - is about 40% more efficient per sq.ft than that Powerfilm. Doesn't work for awning anyway, no matter how big or small. None of them does, I'm afraid.

But that means having your awning out all the time to get power from the sun, the roof would still be the way to go, here in the southwest with our heavy winds my awning/solar panel would blow away.

"Solar awning" Don probably said for laughs.
Goal Zero is foldable, not rollable. Powerfilm is rollable. And Unisolar - that few wanted to buy so they went belly up, but those who bought were quite satisfied. Hopefully new Renovagen flexible will be lighter than Unisolar.
  • flexible + roll-able PV exist already, have for some time actually... as I recall their efficiency doesn't match the solid kind. Goal Zero has a few different rollable products, built to be portable I guess, and I'm sure ebay has them. Not sure if Joe Sixpack can buy the large rolls they make for commercial / industrial installs.

Dunno about others awnings but mine acts like atmospheric moisture condenser; it can have not rained for weeks but when I open it, it is sopping wet and dripping smelly mildew water. Not sure that environment would be good for solar collection.
  • My awning covered in that would be a lot more watts than I could get on the roof.
