foul odor

Is there a way I can get the like sulfur smell out of the hot water heater or put something to make it smell half way decent when onlydo I put a rod in the water heater drain plug or is there product that is user friendly, we do keep water in the tank all summer long, any experience this, like I say we only use it when showering.

Thank you.
  • What Donn0128 said. Your water heater needs a thorough flushing a couple times a season to eliminate the Sulphur smell. This is natural after it's been sitting unused.
  • Sanitize the water heater with bleach or hydrogen peroxide then replace the anode rod with an aluminum or aluminum/zinc alloy rod instead of manganese.
  • I would not remove the anode - that's not the fix. It is protecting the tank while your using it, not just between trips.
There's no down side to it.

If you have a Suburban water heater, this has to be one of the worst suggestions in an era of bad ideas!
The sacrificial anode rod is there to help prevent the stuff in water from attacking and destroying the water tank.
    As for the smell?
That is likely caused by chemicals in the city water. Outside of a RO water purification system I dont know if there is a cure.
BTW if you have a Suburban water heater, turn it off, drain the tank, remove he anode, inspect and replace if necessary, thoroughly flush the tank, replace the anode, refil with water and light it off.
If this is an Atwood tank, remove the drain plug, thoroughly flush and reinstal the plug.
