freezer needs defrosting

Problem solved, I think. we have always put ice trays in our freezer. My wife suggested that may be the problem. so, the last 3 days, i have not put ice trays in the freezer. normally after 3 days i would see the beginning of frost. without the ice trays, the fridge shows no signs of frost.

My freezer frosts up, as well. A real pain, but I just scrape it near clean with a soft plastic spatula every few weeks.

I also keep my frozen food in two containers; one for each shelf; so I can quickly pull out a box and close the door while I fish thru it, instead of standing with the freezer door open.

DO YOU HAVE AN ICE MAKER.. Ice makers put warm water into the freezer (Warm that is in relation to the inside temp of the box) and some of this evaporates and then condenses out on the colder surfaces and frost happens.

I use ice cube trays,, Same thing.

I defrosted mine Thursday, Friday being pay/shopping day the fridge was basically empty already. Moved a few items to the aux freezer, stored fridge contents in "Coleman Cooler" (Ok so it's not a coleman, picnic cooler) and cold bag along with some blue ice,, Turned it off and let it thaw

Finally cleaned, turned back on and later, ,,, Refilled.

1/8 inch of frost ain't enought to worry about. I've had mine get up to 1" of ice between defrosting and it still worked fine. Maybe over thinking the problem? It is not going to remain frost free like a home unit.

Do you use ice trays in the freezer. They will add lots of humidity that will condense and freeze adding more frost. Loose ice in a bucket or bin will also add to extra moisture.

Update. I left the fridge on for 3 weeks, empty. Found a little frost, but nothing serious. I then loaded the fridge & freezer and have been out for 7 days. I found about 1/8 of ice on the back and a little on the top of the freezer. So, back to defrosting. I have done the seal test and had a repair guy look at it while doing other work. He said everything looks good. the only thing i can think of is the door being open too long as mentioned earlier. the other thing i tried on this trip was to open and close the fridge door slowly, thinking opening it fast would suck out cold air leaving warm air to come in. As stated above, the results were having to defrost the freezer after 7 days. FYI, we traveled from the NW to AZ, in case humidity is a problem as mentioned earlier. I welcome any other ideas as this is driving me nuts.

Also putting the food in still in the cardboard box it came in. From the time it left the supermarket until you put it away, that cold cardboard is sucking up the humidity. Use the freezer grade Ziplocs.

IMHO, the humidity makes a big difference. I have to defrost more often in the NW and the South than in the SW but never more often than every couple of weeks.

Door seals leaking......door bill test (or $5--$10 whichever you have)

Opening door frequently....leaving door open and 'window shopping'

OR

Items in freezer section not allowing door to FULLY close

(there is no air circulation as there is no fan blowing....just cold air convection)
