fridge/propane issue?

Just got the rv out of winter storage about two weeks ago. Had some routine maintenance done and had a solar panel installed. EVERY DAY since we've had it back, at least once the "gas" light has started flashing. For two weeks this has happened every day, sometimes only once. Never more than three times. It almost always occurs between midnight and 8 am, but has happened once or twice during the daytime as well.

Of course, I have had this happen before when I FIRST start it after having the gas off. Just restart and its good to go. But in this case, the fridge and gas have been on almost continuous for two weeks.

This is usually a sign of air in the gas line (propane) when starting up. But, once its been running, not sure how air would get in the system to cause this.

Same failure whether on "gas" or "auto".

The fridge is a Norcold, 8 years old. The rv has been bullseye level.

First thought that comes to my mind... Is it possible for propane to get moisture in it like you can get in a gas tank during winter storage? The propane tank was almost full when we stored it, but I guess I'll have it topped off this week to see if that changes anything.

Second, is there any way the solar installation could have affected it? If so, what would it be? (The solar guys can't think of how it would affect anything, but they're willing to have their tech look at it.)

Water heater, furnace & stove have experienced no problems.

Last fall it worked perfectly, so storage and solar install are the only variables that I can see. The solar install comes down the vent over the fridge and through the access panel to the back of the fridge but otherwise, can't see any connection.

As I type this, its 11:20pm. It failed about midnight last night. Fingers crossed tonight!

PS It always fires up immediately when we turn it off and back on.

When is the last time the annual maintenance was done on the burner?

Ding, ding, ding... I think Chris wins the prize.

Never heard of annual maintenance on the fridge before this. :) Had that done and bingo, no more failing. I wanted to bump this back to the top because more than half the people I know here do NOT have annual maintenance done on appliances. So, lesson learned. (I really one have ONE camping partner who does that. More now I believe!)

  • What kind of battery voltage is being maintained now that you have solar....is it going low??
  • Earlier this year, mine was going into "F" mode quite often,......I changed out the sensor/igniter, (about 12 bucks) and it fixed it. If you change it, be sure the gap is correct,.....it can be some what critical
On a different note, it still fails on a hot afternoon if the sun get on the access door,......done that since new I guess,.....and I've learned to live w/ that.
  • How does the fridge sense that propane is not present for igniting the flame? Most propane ignition systems have a flame sensor or thermocouple incorporated. THis is usually wired back to the regulating valve of the appliance. Is it possible that when the solar panel's wires were being led back through the refrigerator cavity that a wire might have been nudged, causing poor contact from a wire clip?

If your other propane appliances are operating correctly, air in the gas line would be one of the last suspects.
