Furnace blew a fuse

Haven't used the furnace (Suburban SF-25) in my rig for a while. Turned it on yesterday at the thermostat and very quickly heard the 15amp fuse snap. Rather than try another fuse, I removed the cover on the outside of the rig to take a look. Reached in tried to spin the blower fan by hand. It's tight (no movement in either direction.) Should this spin freely? What else can I check without removing the furnace itself?

  • Hey, I fixed it. And yup, it was mud daubers alright. A scraper and a vacuum did the job after I pulled the cover off. It's back in and working fine.
  • Okay I've pulled the furnace out of the RV and got it sitting on the workbench. How do I access the fan to find out where it's binding up? What screws do I remove or what covers do I pull off. Lots of them look like they're welded on or have a pretty serious gasket.

  • YES blower should spin.there are no clutches/brakes etc. Just motor resistance.
  • It won't spin at all if the muddubbers have built their nests between the fan blade and the housing. Unless you can access the top of the furnace, you'll probably need to pull it out to take the cover off and see why the blower won't turn. If it is the blower motor, you'd need to do that anyway.
  • But am I correct in thinking that the fan should spin freely? Let's start with that, and then I'll pull it out and look at it.
  • If it's muddubbers, buy the screens so they can't do it again. They love places like that (and the water heater and the refrigerator).
  • I'm afraid it will have to come out- sounds like a nest in the blower has it frozen. Don't keep trying it, as the motor still may be good.
