The chains would also have to break for the battery to come into play. The brake actuator cable that clips to the frame wouldn't be pulled until the ball came off AND the chains broke. Yes it needs a battery if both systems break, unlikely going 3 miles from someones house to storage or 7 miles to a city campground or moving it around at hunt camp. Between dead/damaged batteries from sitting at storage yards and zero brake or wiring maintenance there are probably a surprising number of brake systems that don't work at all. Just my bet. How many people dont even use the controller handle to verify that they work before going onto high speed highways or even going through the mountains. That should be done every time hooking up and I do it again when entering mountain area.
