Yes you need a charged battery for the trailer brakes. Please buy your son a battery. Blue Seas in a quality switch.
Generally rigs are designed to operate with 12V for boon docking, etc. But certain appliances draw to much power for 12V and only run on 120V AC. Among them the HW electric element, A/C, MW and the refer will automatically switch to AC when it's available. TVs don't draw as much but most are also 120V AC. That's why a lot of rigs have a gen.
