Sounds like the safest thing to do is pull the whole unit and have it checked by a professional unless I see something obvious.

You may have Blown a Hole in the Burner Screen!

Furnace is back firing due to an imbalance in air/fuel ratio.....could be as simple as spider webs, mud dabbers nests etc in the combustion/exhaust chamber.

Especially if it's been a while since last used.

A good cleaning of burner chamber and air returns is a good place to start.

Now IF it has been used recently and was working fine....then ??
Which Brand/model of furnace?

And what breaker did you open.......furnace runs on 12V DC power (fuses)?
