Gas can mystery

Did you see any old school Jerry cans with the threaded spout while you were looking? Does anyone sell them?

We also notice these jerry cans give a disclaimer immediately -- "Not to be used for fuel"

It's hard to believe how thin the metal must be to deform that much, even if they call it heavy duty.

I have my dad's old one that is the same and is 50+ years old made by Justrite in Chicago. I see they are still making them. No deformity anywhere and it's had a LOT of use and abuse in it's lifetime. Maybe it's in good shape because of all the leaded gas it's had in it, lol...

"We will send you out a replacement can.Do you still have the box? We would really like to have this sent back to show Quality Control and can send out a UPS call tag.
Small spots can happen due to imperfection in the metal. Our sales manager said he has never seen a spot this big before and this is not normal."

This is really good customer service. My initial contact was via their website contact form, which many businesses ignore.

I suspect that over time, the maker is using thinner metal than in the past.

The less liquid gasoline in the can, the more air or vapor there is in the can, which means more expansion/contraction.

The coefficient of expansion of liquid gasoline is 0.00095 (per degree C).

The coefficient of expansion for ALL gases is 1/273.15 or 0.00366 (per degree C).

This means the vapor/air part of the can will expand (or contract) 3.85 times as much as the liquid part for the same temperature rise.
This means a gallon of liquid gasoline will expand to 1.014 gallons for a 15 degree C temperature rise (about 27 deg F). For a gallon volume of vapor/air, it will expand to 1.05 gallons for the same temperature rise.

To get a better idea, for a typical 2.5 gal gas can liquid gasoline will expand about 4.5 ounces for 15deg C, but if the can is only air/vapor it will expand by 16 ounces.

Keeping the gas can full of liquid gasoline will result in the least amount of bulging or implosion of the can.

Is it my imagination, or does my little Honda EU1000i seem to run a bit stronger on summer fuel than winter fuel? I have a charger, that when run on the battery on summer fuel, the genny runs just fine under heavy load when first charging, while the winter fuel makes the generator act like it's hunting, searching and running too lean, or not enough power to handle the charger. Elevation is the same, winter fuel just seems to cut 10% of the power the generator makes. My kil a watt meter shows it being down about .8 Ah before the motor struggles a bit on winter fuel, trying to hold rpms. I am then forced to adjust the charger voltage down a notch the first 5 minutes before it will take the 14.8V setting. Annoying, to say the least.

Gasoline purchased during the late fall to early spring is allowed to have a higher percentage of "light ends" blended in as opposed to summer blends which are heavier and will not pressure up as much as temps rise.

Well guys, you are on one my favorite topics, lousy gas cans. On our way thru Alberta two weeks ago, I was in a Canadian Tire Store. Checked out the gas cans. Well they had no separate vent with the little cap but the dump tube was about 3/4" in diameter with a vent tube molded along side that was probably 3/16" diameter. Darn near bought one. Well while in Whitehorse, YK, CA. was again in Canadian Tire. Just looking again thinking maybe I'll get one. My eyes probably just about jumped out of the sockets. There was a vent with the little cap and after unscrewing the big cap, here was a good old fashioned flexible plastic tube. Old school! Needless to say I bought one.
