I have been using East Penn gel 12v batteries for years. They are mobility scooter batteries and I get them for free at 18 months of age from rental scooters.
I have never done anything special in caring for them. I do have a charger with a gel setting but I also use two different converters plus the alternator.
Even though mine are used hard for 18 months before I get them they still do fine for years of dry camping.
Trying to charge at high voltage/amperage like an AGM can cause gel batteries to form air pockets inside which does reduce the capacity and serviceable life.
