Generac 50G Voltage Regulator ?

Have a Generac PrimPact 50G 4800 Gen and last trip at times the gen wouldn't work ? Started up fine ran good just wasn't putting anything out. Other times would start it up and worked fine.
It would always pull the no worky when we needed it ! Very frustrating.
We stopped in at a Camping World back East and talked with a tech there.
And as usual we went out to the MH so he could take a peek yep it worked :( He said if it happens again , shut it off wait a min and start it back up it should work. he had replaced 3 voltage regulators in the last 4 months on the same symptoms. Is there a way to check the voltage reg ?
Its frustrating because the last 4 times I have fired up the Gen it has worked...

  • Guess I should have worded it a little better.
The tech said he had replaced 3 other VR's on 3 other MH's with that exact symptom.
And that took care of the problem while the MH was at the shop. They were all traveling through and he never heard back from them.
    No I haven't had 3 VR's replaced on mine...
  • Don't know about Generac, but for Onan, if you are blowing VRs like that it points to bad brushes/slip rings. The rings get tarnished enough that the VR has to put out very high excitation voltages (the voltage regulator feeds dc power through the brushes to the rotating rotor , which spins past the stationary stator coils. Higher DC in to the rotor makes higher AC out of the stator, but bad brushes or dirty slip rings cut that voltage down.)
