Generac Genny No Crank?

Generac Model 00862-2 QuietPact 55G (QP55).
I decided to service the generator to make sure it is useable. Started looking and found it is in need of some maintenance. PO was NOT in the habit of doing any from the looks of things.
I tried to start it, and heard rapid, heavy clicking. I disconnected the cable going to the starter, and tried the start button. The contactor had a good click indicating it was closing, but I heard a soft clicking sound coming from inside the housing where the switches and PC board are located. I located one page from a service manual, that matches the wire numbers on my wire diagram, but it ends after a couple of test procedures. Trying to get the switch panel off is going to be fun, since it is right next to the genny housing. Might anyone have any insight to what might be clicking inside there? I'm sure it is a relay, but is it part of the board, or replaceable on it's own? This genny is about a 2004 model, and obsolete. I don't really want to buy another one, soince I will probably not ever use it, but I like everything working like it should.
Edit add info: At some point within the past couple of months, there was an attempt to start it from the panel inside the RV. It didn't start, but in reality, we really could not hear what was going on at the genny, so it may have been doing this then as well.

  • This is starting to not look good. There is an auto reset 2.5A CB close to the voltage regulator. It is attached to a "DPE" winding in the generator portion. It is the exact area where I am hearing the light clicking noise when I have the starter cable disconnected from the starter contactor. I am going to have to disconnect it and see if there is a short in the coil, and if it makes a difference in the clicking noise.
I also found a heat damaged connector on a heavy duty 1 ohm, 5%, 25 watt resistor. It is marked OHMITE 470-25K-40 1R000J. And a ground wire was not connected near the carb solenoid.
I need kid sized hands, and if both worked, that would help immensely.
  • I just printed out the diagram and the page from the service manual. It's much easier with the info in front of me, rather than run in and out.
Edit: I have a clamp ammeter to check draw that is going outside with me.
  • Voltage doesn't tell you if the batteries are capable of large amp draws. A voltmeter on them when you're trying to crank will.
  • Battery was my first thought as well. The genny is hooked up to the house batteries, and there is a charger hooked to them. I just checked and the voltage is 13.7. I have the cover off and looking inside to see if anything looks back at me. I will also slot the screw holes to make reassembly easier.
  • x2 clicking is a sign of low battery or bad connection. do the easy stuff first ,charge battery clean post etc.
