First, things like starter solenoids typically last a REALLY long time. Second, any time you screw with something without the proper knowledge and training there is always a chance you will screw it up.
Alas his report can serve as a perfect example of this last point.
Now it's likely that he is in for a BIG repair bill......and there still is no indication that he charged or tested the battery.
Very sad. It is important that a person knows his own limitations.
