OP - Any chance battery polarity got reversed as you were servicing the connections? Sorta sounds like that's what happened.
Be glad it's BGE and not the older BFA like we had. THOSE had the start winding in the armature itself. Fry that and the whole genny's useless.
Do your have the Service Manual? I'll try to gOOgle for it. Some of us have better luck finding that stuff than...me...
