Our generator in the last 12 months was only used when we "exercised" it. So maybe 20 hours total for year. Manual says change oil every 150 hours or annually. But I'm wondering what's the ...

Moisture, condensation, in the oil, forms acids, forms rust or acts in a corrosive manner. Hence the R&R of motor oil.
Yes...exercising the genset helps prevent rust/condensation buildup. Also, regular oil & filter change, at least yearly is wise and cheap insurance for a healthy genset.
