I would mount it on the tractor, without question. I would be inclined to modify the trailer side to accept a locking inlet plug (NOT a double-male suicide cord). Then I would use a SHORT custom-sized cord for OTR travel, and then longer cords as needed when camping.
If space allows, I would try to fab some sort of articulated arm for the gennie, so that I could easily set it on the ground.
