When I was a lot younger I could clearly hear a 1,500 watt Honda generator over a mile distant across a wilderness lake. The generator experience I liked best was on a 57' sloop, with the Honda generator aft in the cockpit with the wind on the bow.
Portable generators do not have a neutral. 3-Phase delta wound generators do not have a neutral. 3-phase Wye wound generators have a neutral. Your house has neutral because it originates in the transformer on the pole out in the street.
Mexico is the only place WYE wound transformers are common. Four wires off the transformer.
But the OP might be talking about having the control wires reversed in the starting switch. That is not reverse polarity, rather a mis-wired switch.
