Generator running AC, is single Honda too small ??

Will a Honda 2000 series generator run a 15000btu AC unit by itself? I was looking at the specs and the Honda EU2000i makes 16.7 amps and after testing my AC startup amp draw it is just a little over 10amps. I have seen a lot of people connecting 2 units together but the cost is out of reach. I have a Champion 4000 but I have no way to transport it because of its size and no enclosure. I'm considering the Honda so it will fit in the truck tool box.

  • Our 15 starts and runs ok at sea level 95F ambient with Honda 3000. Not tried it higher and hotter. Also ok on shore power 15a pedestal. (requires careful 120v "power management" of course)

Ours is a long bed, so the H3000 fits nicely between the hitch and the tool box.

  • Well the Champion 4000 I have will run the AC no problem but it's tough to transport. Currently i'm looking for an enclosure to put it in.
  • My Yahama diesel 5500 EU used to droop to 101 volts (sea level) during high head startup of a Coleman 13.5K. I had to use a 240/120 transformer to correct the problem. The generator had a 20 amp 120vac twist lock receptacle and 20 amp 120vac breaker.
  • Hi,

I was just at the Honda shop. The 3000 watt unit says right on the promo card "will start most 13500 btu air conditioners".

So you would definitely need twin 2000 watt units.
  • Hi. I also have a 2011 Chapperal so suspect the same 15k AirCond. I suspect your 10 amp reading is more likely running amps not startup amps. I never measured it but tried mine on a 3200watt surge/2800watt contineous generator and it will barely start it. I have the dual Honda setup as well and the twins run the AC just fine. I have never tried it with one and based on the other generator won't even try it

I have heard of some people being able to start and run a 13.5K AC with a single honda 2k with modifications to the start circuitry but never a 15k
  • No way a EU2000 will run a 15000 A/C and would have a hard time running a 13500
    A/C JMHO
