I have a Yamaha 2400 gen and a 13.5 kBtu air con with a Supco hard start capacitor that I installed. The gen can reliably start the air con at home at ~4000' elevation. When I get much higher in elevation than that, it is hit or miss. If it does start up the compressor, then later when it cycles I'm facing the same hit or miss results like RoyB mentions. I turn everything else off including flipping the breaker for the converter off when we want to use the air con on gen power. It is pretty rare that we feel like we "need" the air con, especially now that my boys are old enough to not need the afternoon nap. We pretty much exclusively rely on battery -> inverter for any ac power needs while camping. Solar keeps up the recharging. We boondock 100% of the time.
