You need to get a good Onan person- I'm pretty sure the starter is disengaged when it generates power, so fix that, and you don't have to gerry rig something.
Of course- it also needs to generate power to run, but bad brushes or VR could cause it to produce low power, under the hold in of the transfer switch.
Maybe one of the generator guys will chime in.
