I checked the generator by disconnecting the VR and had no AC coming out of the generator itself. IE the need to get to the brushes and slip rings. To do this with human hands in this enclosure is not possible.

If it only runs with the start button held down that is a sign that voltage is not leaving the generator. This could be brush's, it could also be the voltage regulator. There are ways to check the regulator without dropping the unit. Some allow changing the regulator without dropping it and others don't. You need a good manual for your particular unit. It can be downloaded from Onan. Dropping the unit depends a lot on the make of your RV, but with a floor jack and an assistant it should not be beyond doing if you are handy.

First of all you need to determine if the generator is producing power. It could also be a control board problem.
