Girard Tankless water heater "different" installation

Hi everyone.

I just bought a Girard tankless water heater.
I plan on installing it in my DIY campervan conversion.

This is where I want to install it and I want to use the smaller cargo door as the access door, I can't install the standard flat access door on the curved exterior of the van.

I was thinking installing these Furnace exhaust tubes in the door, the tubes would disconnect when I would open the door.
The door would shut against the water heater and would be sealed off with an automotive gasket around the edge of the opening (see pictures)

Can you guys give me your opinions? I will send this link to Girard also.

Thanks!

  • I think you will have a problem, containing the Hot exhaust
Your extensions are slip over therefore hot exhaust will leak around the extension and has too be contained by the rubber gasket door seal you want to make
    This is a hazardous condition
    Find a better way

Interesting, I never heard about them or there products before.
where do you buy it? And what price?
can't seem to find any info on the net.

I don't know the answer to any of those questions, but I'm sure if you're persistent, you'll get what you need.

I do know, that for 2016, Winnebago is going this route in their Class B Travato lineup. Previously, they were using an all electric Atwood marine WH. That's what I have and frankly, I don't find it all that inconvenient to operate. You might also look into them. Atwood also makes models that augment the electric heat with heat from your car's radiator coolant.

CO is nothing to joke about and I see a lot of it in your future with DIY venting on the Girard.

Return the Girard and get a Truma Combi. You'll have hot water and a furnace in one small package and you can vent it just about anywhere.

  • I sent them a message late last night and I got this reply early this morning :

Your installation is not correct and may create a hazardous condition.
You must utilize the Girard Door kit so you have proper ventilation and the water heater housing and the door/flange assembly must be joined together.
If you look at different van converters (Roadtrek, Pleasureway, etc.) water heater installations you will see they make a frame that allows the water heater to be mounted flush to the side wall.
Per our manual, professional installation is strongly suggested.

I understand that it's much easier for them to recommend the standard installation.
But what I'm proposing is simply sealing off the access side of the water heater exactly like there door does but extending the exhaust tube and air intake by barely 4", the only difference is the extension thru the cargo door. Am I not thinking straight?

  • It's hard to envision. I seriously doubt you will receive any sort of endorsement from Girard.
