Golf cart batterys

This spring I'm upgrading to 6 volt golf cart battery's.
My question is , do I need to upgrade the charging system of the camper ?
The rv is a 2013 Palomino B-800.
Any input ?

The rule of thumb I follow is to have around 20AMPS per battery of charge capacity. In the case of using two 6VDC batteries would fall under the two battery rule. This would need a minimum of 40AMPS of available charge current.

You can get away with smaller charge capacity but it will not recharge your batteries back in a three hour charge time which is what most folks want when camping off the power grid.

  • Hard to know unless you post what model converter you have.
Voltage is more important than amps. You need 14.2+ volts to get a charge in quickly with a generator. This goes for 12v or 6v batteries.
  • Hi,

Modern electronic battery chargers normally do not require upgrading. If it is above 45 amps output, you should be fine. There are only a couple of manufactures out there still installing a small 30 amp converter/charger. Most are fine.

The battery capacity will be about 220 amp hours per pair of golf cart batteries, and 45 amp charger can take them from 50% full to full in about 4 hours. If you plan on recharging via generator, then about 2 hours per day is normally more than enough to fill them.

My suggestion is to also get a 100 watt solar panel and a low cost PWM controller. Some wire and aluminum, you can permanently install it on the roof, and keep that battery full all the time.

SunElec.com has 12 volt solar panels for a very reasonable cost.

No. When 6v batteries are wired in series you essentially have very large 12v batteries. This applies whether you buy wet cell or AGM 6v batteries.
