I am curious as to why a stand alone GPS still seems to be so popular. What with smart phones and tablets being readily available I would think that the stand alone units would sort of fade away. I me...

There seems to be more apps for Android, but apps for Apple iOS also exist. Both free and for pay. Google Maps is my favorite for on-line, and you can download some selected area for off-line use, the only problem is that it will expire after 1 month.
Next time you have to upgrade either smartphone or tablet, - keep the old one. For off-line use it works fine for many more years, and if it's a smartphone - you won't be getting any annoying calls 'cause it's not activated on your plan.
