Grape Solar flexible 100w panels

Just throwing this out for discussion. I already have a portable kit so this is not for me.

Seems like this could make a very easy to store portable. I don't think they can be rolled up, but being thin and flexible, anyone should have some place to store it. The panel has a mounting hole in each corner. Add a couple of legs with spikes on each end. Jam one end of each leg into the ground and the other sticks through the hole on the panel, and you have tilt. Spike the other end of the panel to the ground.

They are sold by several big retailers. AM Solar mentions them but says they have problems with cupping which leads to water and crud buildup. But as a portable that shouldn't happen. $300, so they are not cheap.

Thoughts?

  • Seems to me a long-standing company would have an easy to understand warranty. How long a period of time will they 100% WARRANTY a "defective" panel? How long have they been in business?
  • They are essentially the cells from the Grape Solar GS-100 sandwiched between a polyethylene laminate. The GS-100 is an outstanding performer. The Flex panels may be better suited to portable applications where they can be moved periodically to maintain an adequate sun angle.

I think Greg means "not ready for prime time" in a flat installation on the roof of an RV due to cupping of the cells in high heat. I think for a portable solution they may work well.
  • I'm using two standard 100W Grape panels. the have an aluminum frame around them, so I mounted them with a piano hinge on one side. When we travel, I fold the panels together so they are protected, and they are easy to unfold and clip to the roof when we're boon docking. Costco has the 100W panels on sale right now for $109.95 each. Add a 30A (450W) controller for about $95, and you're set.
