If the finish is still there scratch your theory. Chemical reactions often produce unexpected results. Carb cleaners are low Ph. Household cleaners are high Ph. That produces even more by products including salts.
When I did a carburetor it got soaked in boiling hot water.
I chuckle at today's mentality with removing scale buildup on heat transfer pipes. USE VINEGAR! to clean a coffeemaker. They are ignorant about the process components that actually will remove scale -- a followup with a high Ph reactant that serves to actually remove the binder. In this case, baking soda.
You got rid of what ailed the carburetor, learned some things and shared -- a success in my book.
