Grill regulator frosts up

I bought a Lowes' Master Forge portable lp gas grill(uses 1-lb disposable bottles). I have a High pressure and Low pressure connecton on the MH. The high pressure connection is a 1/20 fitting and shut off valve on black pipe plumbed to the on-board LPG tank-before the HM's LPG regulator.

Anyhow, when on a 12' hose (1/20 fittings on each end) from the MH's high pressure connection, the grill's regulator frosts up and eventually cuts off the flow of LPG.

I don't want to go back to the 1-lb bottles. Suggestions?

  • Can't explain it. Used the 1-lb bottle and no frost so for the next meal I switched back to the hose from the MH. No frost, the regulator wasn't even cold.
  • Hope the tank is not overfilled!!!

Propane condensing in the black pipe/12' hose making its way to the grill's regulator, water vapor in propane.
  • Try a higher quality two-stage regulator made for higher volume.

A temporary solution to get you through the meal is to keep the regulator submerged in a pail of water. I can't say if it causes any harm the the regulator, but I've done it dozens of times.

Another cause I've experienced is even the slightest leak upstream which cools or freezes the fittings at the leak and sends chilled fuel to the regulator.

Generally the grill needs high pressure to a regulator, Low pressure grills do not have a regulator.. It may be possible to obtain a low prssure adapter for your grill but I've never tried to search for them.

Frosting suggests liquid propane reaching the regulator, if not Try using an additional 10 feet of hose to get it farther from the MH tank.
  • Whoa Hoss!
A lot of so-called PROPANE bottles are actually filled with BUTANE. They can scream PROPANE all they want on the label but pressure gauges do not lie. I had to use a standard 11" water column regulator off my bulk PROPANE tank, pry the cap off the regulator and twist the pressure up to 18". It then was fed to my grille's regulator with a hose and forever since has worked fine. If the flame in the grille seems low, twist the NEW regulator up to twenty to thirty inches of water column to fine tune the flame.

TOO MUCH PRESSURE DROP in the regulator causes icing. The same process as freon AC. Heavy on the word DROP. Differential pressure.
  • I haven't tried the bottles as I was done cooking when the flow quit. I'll try this weekend (Memorial Day).
  • The small disposable propane bottles are high pressure, just like the tank on the MH. Do you get frost on the regulator when using the disposable bottles? Do the disposable bottles frost up when you use them?

If the frost only occurs when connected to the MH high pressure connection, perhaps you are getting liquid propane, rather than propane gas from that connection.
  • Are you sure your grill needs high pressure? Frost up usually indicates to high of a flow
