Heard a Boom

So now I think I have an issue I need help with. At the lake this weekend and drained both galley and bathroom gray water tanks last night. This morning my daughter took a shower and told me the tank needed emptied. I knew I had drained it it last night so it shouldn't be full. I drained the tank and it didn't seem like it drained with the normal "swoosh". I started to fill the tank with cold water from the bathroom sink to try and trouble shoot what I believed to be a drainage issue. After about 5 minutes of running water I heard a big boom. I'm guessing the bathroom gray water tank has ruptured but nothing has come out on to the ground. Any suggestions to determine if the tank has in fact ruptured would be helpful.

  • So after some additional research I don't think I blew a tank. I feel kind of stupid actually. It was incredibly windy last Saturday here in the great State of Wind (aka Kansas). I'm just standing outside the camper later in the evening doing nothing in particular and I hear this big bang and look up to see the basement storage door swinging free where it had been in the open latched position a few seconds before. I thought hmmmm....now that sound seemed awfully familiar. On Sunday after my daughter woke up I did a test. I asked her to set in the camper where she was the day before and tell if the bang she's going to here sounded anything like the bang she heard the day before. I opened the basement door all the way up and slammed it shut. Guess what? She said it sounded exactly like the bang we heard on Saturday. I thought well we'll see how the tanks drain when I go to the dump station........at the dump stations the bathroom gray water tank drain perfectly. Only explanation I have. The only other test I plan to do is to fill the gray tank completely up with water to to the bottom of the shower drain to see if the tank has any cracks in it.
  • You didn't say how old your DD is, but a teenage girl showering and washing her hair for 20 minutes running wide open can create all kinds of havoc. That boom you heard may have been the water tower in town collapsing. Ask me how I know :). Hope you had a nice Fathers Day.

I think it's more likely it's just the tank flexing because of a vent issue.
Manufacturers are notorious for not installing the roof vents correctly. If you go up and remove the lid of the vent, you should find that there's space between the top of the black pipe and the under side of that lid. Often there isn't enough gap and the vent becomes useless. If that's the case just use a hack saw to remove what ever excess you can. In the past I've just cut some deep groves in the pipe to fix it. It doesn't have to be pretty in order to work right.

  • I wouldn't think you ruptured the tank just from water draining out of the sink. In order to rupture the tank you really need pressurized water like from a hose to a flush attachment. But the tank may have started dropping off the poorly designed mounts that hold it up. I would be taking a look under the trailer and make sure that the tank is still secured.
  • you might also have a soap plug in the drain pipe that makes it hard to drain properly. happened to us.

To add to this, the vent pipe may also be pushed down to the bottom of the tank closing it off there.

  • May have sucked a partial vacuum because the vent is clogged.
Try to drain again and then run a hose down the roof vent while valve is open and if water runs out at about the same volume going down the vent then the vent is OK
    Good Luck, Mike
  • May have popped on top, thus no leak until it is sloshed around. Hope not. Good luck with your mystery.
