For your diagnosis you need to break the troubleshooting down into easy steps.
First, do you have a hand-held meter? If not, your first step is to find someone that does and skill to use it. I'd suggest to buy a cheap one for future use.
Measure voltage at the control panel switch, both before the switch and after. It sounds like your inverter/charger is providing 120VAC when the switch is off. It may also be that you only have an indicator light with a wired transfer switch. The application of 240V may have injured that transfer switch.
