HELP Generator won't start

We have a 6500 watt Guardian Generac generator in our motorhome. When I went to start it for the monthly run last weekend it did not start only sputtered, I went outside to check it and it was pumping gas out of the air cleaner! I am assuming this would be caused by a stuck float? Am I correct? What would be the cure? I have thought of getting some "Sea Foam" and trying to run through it, would this help? This also happened a couple of months ago and I dumped the gas out of the air cleaner and tried it again and it started right up and ran Fine, this time no such luck.
Any helpful ideas appreciated.
Bill
  • You are most likely correct in assuming the float or needle valve is stuck. Seafoam is not too effective on something that has had bad gas in it for a long time. Probably all fresh gas and a new carb would be the best solution. Having dismantled many carburetors in my lifetime, the only thing I have ever seen really clean them was an overnight soak in Gunk 'Hydroseal' dip. It's getting pretty hard to locate rebuild kits for carbs anymore as they are becoming considered throw-away items. Rather than Seafoam, I'd suggest Stabil fuel stabilizer in the tank in the recommended dilution. Best thing with the gas is to carry a 5 gallon can of gas and run the MH until it's almost out of gas (the can in case you guess wrong) then put about 1/4 tank in and add the Stabil. Of course it would be better to use the MH every couple weeks to keep everything fresh!
  • Good points by Garyemunson, Do it right the first time, pull the carb. Keep us posted on your progress.
  • Your diagnosis of a stuck float (or more likely a float with a hole in it so that it sank) is a good one, and quite likely. No amount of Seafoam or other chemical cleaner is going to help at all. The only solution is to disassemble the carb and find out if the float is full of gas. And it may be that the only cure is a new carb.
  • Thanks all for the replies. Looks like I will try pulling the carb and see what is going on. I will follow up with what I find.
  • Original poster here. Quick update bought a can of SeaFoam a 3 way valve some fuel hose and clamps. Mounted the valve so can run from main tank, or from auxilary tank-SeaFoam or just run Carb dry.
Took a bit of cranking to get it to start with no fuel going in as the float bowl was full then switched back and forth between gas SeaFoam and off ending with letting it run on SeaFoam until can was about empty and Carb full. I let this sit overnight to soak everything with the SeaFoam.
Next evening went out and started again going back and forth between gas and off until it started to run and no more overflowing of the Carb, It smoked like the dickens for about 5 minutes then smoothed out and ran fine. I added a load to it and ran it for an hour and have ran it everyday since to test it for a few minutes.
I will run the Carb dry tonight and see if that works to eliminate the problem in the future.
  • I always use either stabil or Enzyme in the proper amount every time I fill up Enzyme seems to work better for me, I put it in my gas can prior to filling the can this way it is well mixed. Also If available, on all my small engines I use non-ethanol gas they run much better and have less problems.
