Help with Cummins Onan Marquis Gold altitude problems
I'm trying to help a friend who is not an Internet/Forum kind of person. He has a Cummins Onan Marquis Gold gas generator model 55HGJAB-6755K. We live at 8200 feet, and he regularly camps between 9-10K feet. The generator has always had hot starting problems at altitude. He had it serviced under warranty a couple of times. He finally talked with someone at Cummins in Henderson, Colorado who knew what they were talking about.
The fix involves replacing the sealed factory carb with a new high altitude carb part #A040N099 at $368. After he replaces the carb, it will run great at 9K feet but ****py at 2K feet. The Onan guy said if he went to sea level and wanted to use the generator, he would have to switch back to the original carb.
Questions for you: Has anyone hacked the original factory sealed carb and rejected it? How involved is replacing the factory carb with the high altitude carb? Is it a do-it-yourself thing?
Other suggestions and comments are welcome.
