Many auto parts stores will test an alternator for free. That being said, as someone stated you can do an easy test yourself. After the battery has set for a while without being charged (alternator running or plugged in), test the voltage of the battery with a volt meter. It will probably be mid to high 12's for a newer battery. Start the engine and check the voltage at the battery again. If it went up to the mid 13's or higher then the alternator is charging pretty good. If the voltage didn't change or is going down then it's time to have a parts store test the alternator.
