My daughter has one that works like you and Doug describe. As I recall, there's a control we're supposed to hold till the meter stabilizes in the Green.
Many of us have the fridges with logic board and electronic ignition. So, some replies may not help with the type you've got.
Thanks! I have the owner's manual and read it. It tells how to start the fridge, but it didn't seem to tell how to be sure it was running.
