Help with specific gravity

We're getting ready to start our camping season. When you live in the Mojave, you don't camp in the summer!

I had to replace the pendant on my PD as it was no longer going into 14.4 mode using the button. My RV is on shore power all the time. My volt meter generally reads 13.2v.

I checked the specific gravity on my 7 year old Costco cart batterys with a quality hygrometer and it read 1.275 +/- .02 on all 6 cells and the temperature correction thermometer read +12.

I assume that means 1.275 +.012 = 1.287. Is that correct?

That seems to be too high.
  • Looks good. It can vary from 1.275 to 1.300 depending on the amount of sulfuric acid the manufacturer put in.

Wow !!! The PD hater here on this forum will just love to hear that.

In reality, why don't you just put the caps back on your battery(s), and deep six your hydrometer. When you have a PD converter caring for your batteries, you don't need to check anything except the electrolyte level. And you don't even have to check that very often.

I usually just check it once a year at the start of camping season and usually only add a very small amount of distilled (water that is!)
  • 1.277 SG at 80*F 100% SOC 12.73V

TO correct specific gravity readings to 80*F:
    ADD 0.004 for every 10*F above 80*F
    SUBTRACT 0.004 for every 10*F below 80*F

    SO IF +12 was 12*F above 80*F then 1.275 plus 0.004 --- 1.279

Ahh,,, that makes sense. The chart on the temperature correction thermometer is the add or subtract temperature. I thought it was a direct correction to the specific gravity.

    Thanks for your clarification.
  • I feels good. I doan need no stupid "lab tests". Ah say, ah say ah feels good ah doan need no lab tests. Laboratory tests is for... (KAH-THUMP!)...

can ya share the make of your quality hydrometer?

I've had it a long time and the label is gone. It's 16" tall.
