Help with water heater

I have an Atwood 10 gal lp/elec water heater and I'm going to replace the tank. Do I need gaskets for this? All I've done so far is taken it out and haven't disassembled. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Well good news for me. All it was the grey tank was full and evidently the drains have come unsealed. I dumped the tank and no more problems. I've checked everything else and all is well. One day this week I'll pull the converter and order a new one. What's a good one that will be good for all led lighting?
  • I'm dreading getting under there to see what's up. I haven't thought about the drains busted. Oh well as soon as this coffee kicks in I'll get busy
  • I had a similar problem with my 1988 Prowler. I bought it from a neighbor and it was not winterized and all the plumbing froze.
I ended up replacing my whole 6 gallon Atwood water heater, tank was cracked in 3 or 4 places and the insulation had been removed at some point and was missing.
Once I got the new water heater in, and tried to pressurize the system, I found the inlet valve on the toilet was broken and spraying water everywhere.
Also every drain trap, including the one under the shower pan was broken.

Luckily I didn't have to replace any pipes.
  • Yep I agree to welding the tank. There's a guy on my job that can do it at work for me on Tuesday. But I found a 10 gal suburban on Craigslist for 125$. I put it in yesterday after work. It works fine. Except I'll have to trim my opening bout 1/4". I took the insulation off and got it in just to make sure it works. Now I see that I have busted water lines. Looks like I'll have to re plumb the whole thing. Originally it was plumbed in grey quest pipe. Looks like PEX is the best replacement. But I may just go with pvc/cpvc. I guess I'm learning the hard way bout these rvs.
  • I see in your profile that you have a 1999 RV.

All Atwood tanks since 2006 now use a 3/4" T&P Relief valve ....your 1999 used 1/2" so you will need a new T&P

New tank comes with retainer rings/gaskets/spacers etc.

Due to old vs new you might need to make some mods to draw pan to fit/align combustion/exhaust pipe.

Check pricing for re-weld vs new tank------especially if leak can be welded without complete disassembly

    Replacement tank reference chart

1999 vintage......might be better served by NEW water heater vs just tank.
But that would also require new wiring/controls.....120V AC controlled by DC Voltage.
  • If I had a spool gun mig welder I could fix it to. No telling what a machine shop in the Cali Bay Area would charge. Thanks for the reply. When I order it I'll make dilute to include that
  • Which model do you have?

I just had my tank welded which required the removal of the front plate, and yes I had to replace the rings which included gaskets.
