That makes sense... inductors and circuits for reducing voltages in a MPPT controller (which is needed anyway for any voltages significantly higher than the battery charge) are cheaper than using fat copper wires, so going to 108 volts can save on the precious metal big time.
Of course, there is the electrocution hazard of higher voltage circuits.
