Hissing from power source control panel

95 Wilderness 5th wheel

Love it but not the high pitched hissing noise that comes out of the electrical control panel. 30 amp. Basic research says this may be Normal but I am super noise sensitive.

This is making me want to jump out of my skin!

If we unplug the battery the noise stops. I'm fine with this as we camp with electric hookups. Is there anything that will cause a problem if we make it a habit to unplug the battery?

Or a better solution to the annoying hiss?

  • I feel ur pain brodda..... I'm hyper-sensitive to sound and smell; always the 1st to pick up one or the other. It's a curse..

If its really a hiss, it's likely coming from the transformer in the switching supply, and the only thing you can do is to attempt to acoustically isolate it. It sounds like its high enough in frequency that open cell foam might squelch it a bit, but the trick is installing it where it will do some good but still not block cooling of the unit.

Option #2 is acoustical fiberglass panel board. This stuff comes in various thicknesses and is used as sound deadening and isolation in stages, and it's obviously not highly combustible. You might want to look around on the web for some of this material and see if you can get some samples sent out since that about all you need.
  • He disconnected the battery - when connected to power - which made the sound stop. Only later did I realize that it was a false fix. It still makes the hissing sound - in various increments - depending on the power draw. Flip on a light switch - hear the hiss. Some lights on, others off, different hiss.

I'm hoping when we are out with the ac on it covers it because its annoying as all heck. I think it's a sound that many probably don't even notice - but if you do - you DO.
  • I don't think I'm understanding the question correctly. How do you "unplug" the battery? I'm also assuming the noise is generated by the power converter because I can't think of anything else in the panel that could create a noise. My converter makes noise that bothers me only overnight. When retiring I just shut its breaker off. The fridge is on the same breaker and I let it run on propane overnight. This applies only when hooked to shore power of course. If the converter makes noise when not hooked to shore power, something really weird is happening.
  • Thanks for the input!

We did open the cover that opens easily and it's nice and clean. DH looked at it pretty closely and thought maybe some compressed air would help so we will definitely go over it with an eye toward pic and span.

Will also check into the age of the battery.

This is a help. Thank you!
  • Have you taken the front cover off the converter to see if you can pinpoint what is hissing? Given it is a 95 model it is probably full of dust around the converter components and a good blowing out with compressed air may resolve the noise.
  • Two things.
    1. Unplug from shore power and tighten down all screws in the breaker panel.
    2. Check your battery, it could be dry or bad.
  • It is likely the converter (charger) making the noise but most don't hear anything other than the fan running from time to time as cooling is needed. Might try some "white noise" to cancel it out. I know my own Tinitis can be a real annoyance under some circumstances.
