  • A while back NAPA had a sale on their platinum filters with the synthetic media and I bought a case. It's hard to keep up with what's the latest developments; how to know if the products evaluated even a year ago or two are unchanged?

Generally I stick with brands I trust- Mobil, NAPA, Wix, Baldwin. Motorcraft for the Fords from Wally world.
  • The thought was to provoke the subject not a definitive survey. The Mobil 1 filter supposedly uses a rubber based filtering media. I am not enamored with "Gohner" brand of filters down here. Fram is ubiquitous, I consider the brand to be the "Yugo" of oil filters.

I am getting ready to order filters through Rock Auto, and Mobil 1 looks like it is worth considering for oil filtering. Baldwin as well.
  • I see lots of incorrect information in it and lots of biased opinion too.

Also oil filters are hardly immune to the maximum profiteering and relabelling bonanza of all other products of late so this dated material is likely not very representative of the products on the shelf of today either

My filters all use a 3/4-16 inch thread. I use Mobil-1 and Fram Ultra filters and will save money elsewhere.

I do employ a Motorcraft FL-1a too which is not a high end filter, but does have a thread end bypass instead of a dome end bypass.
  • Since all of the information is at least 9 years old and some much older (1999) there is not much to take away from it IMO.
