Honda 2000: surprisingly poor oil fill tube design

Honda prides itself on being environmentally friendly. So it is odd (to say the least) that the oil fill tube on the Honda 2000 is so tricky – some spillage is almost guaranteed. Look at this diag...

I'll admit, my first fill, I did make a small mess, but hard to clean up from case bottom. Nope, didn't tip on side to fill, just used the handy funnel supplied, which when inserted, you can't see oil filling. I did know exactly how much I added (following manual suggested amount), to make it over full. Next change/fill, added slightly less, no mess, pull funnel out, perfect.
