I had a similar problem with my 2000. One day it ran fine, the next day it wouldn't start no matter how many times I pulled the cord. I removed the spark plug and blocked the hole with my thumb and then pulled on the cord. No compression whatsoever. The problem turned out to be the intake valve was stuck in the open position. I managed to get the valve unstuck and have had no problems since.
