monkey44 - I do the same thing here. For Camping off the power grid We figured out what all we wanted to run from 120VAC and what we wanted to run from 12VDC and beefed up the battery capacity to handle this. Of course the 120VAC items has to run from a battery hungry INVERTER. Most of our heavy battery drain is from 8PM to 11PM which we pull a good 20AMPS from the batteries. The rest of the time it is around 1 or 2 AMPS mostly running the parasitic items...
This figures out around 250-300WATTS from the batteries so I am using three GP24 85AH batteries (255AH capacity) to handle this for the one day/night run off the battery. At 8AM the next morning I want my my batteries to just be at their 50% charge state (around 12.0VDC)
Then we needed to beefup up the converter/charger on our OFF-ROAD POPUP to allow us to re-charge our batteries as quick as possible as it seems everywhere we go here on the East side of the US has generator run time restriction. With smart-mode charging technology we can re-charge our batteries back up to the 90% charge each day starting around 8AM. Now we can do the all over again for the next day/night camping run off the batteries.
We can do about two weeks of these 50% to 90% charge states cycles before we have to do a full 100% charge state which usually takes around 12-13 hours to complete. This is usually the time we head back for the barn and do our 100% charge state at the house. No where we can run our generator that long of a time where we camp at here on East side of the US. the generator Gas tank is only good for 6-7 hours also...
I just brought up the nice sine wave the Inverter type generator produce and they are very friendly with all of your electronics. When I am running my generator to re-charge my batteries I use anything and everything off the generator during that run time period. I definitely make my fresh brewed bean coffee and momabear might even cook something on the electric skillet. Our home entertainment item runs just fine off the generator when connected to the trailer 30AMP Shore Power cables and from the pure sine wave Inverter off the batteries.
Some of the older type generators were not electronics friendly and looked pretty bad wave form wise...
My next thing I want to add to my setup is some solar panels to trickle charge my batteries during the day time hours when I am not running the generator. Like others have done you can sometimes skip a day or two running your generator if you are in a good sun area during the daytime hours..
