I'm not sure that one can successfully troubleshoot using an amp meter. In fact, I'd bet that you'll never find the problem.
Proper troubleshooting uses a voltmeter and or a test light and an ohm meter when needed. I think using an amp meter to troubleshoot will drive you crazy.
