Hot water heater problem

Today our HW heater would not work on gas. On the outside of the heater, there were instructions to:
turn the gas an electric power off.
wait 5 minutes then turn all back on to light.
If this does not work, repeat the above.

I did this twice and the second time it did light. can someone tell me what caused this problem?

Thanks

  • The WH would not work this passed week-end. It is a suburban SW10DE, I verified there is power to the rocker switch which is on the outside of the trailer. Inside the trailer is a switch to turn the WH on, when on there is a red light that comes on and stays on during operation. It would not come on at all....I went outside and did 2 things. Placed a ice pick end, in the orfice ever so gently then hit the gas valve with the other end of the pick. The WH started to work. At this point I don't know if the orfice was stopped up or if it was the gas valve.
What causes the light INSIDE to light up under normal conditions? There are 2 solenoids, does one replace them or the gas valve. Thanks
  • Suburban WHs have a history of the a gas valve solenoid coil going open circuit. I know in my case it was at first intermittent but one of the 2 coils eventually failed open circuit. Normal coil resistance is about 40 ohms each.
  • It is a suburban, had 12 volt power and propane to the stove was good. Before following the above instructions I did check for loose wires and reset button to no avail.
  • Not lighting....
could be propane flow issue like suggested
could be low voltage to ignitor
    could be poor ground

The procedure is a CYI safety
gas off/electric ff/wait 5 mins before trying......that is so there is no gas built up and it spark-light off and go whooosh in your face no eyebrows).
The 5 min wait allows any previous gas that didn't light a chance to dissipate
  • what kind of WH is it? if a suburban then I would take off the black cover and check the wire fittings and see if they are making contact. when we went to Yuma last year that happened to us and the tech took off the cover and wiggled a wire and the gas came on.
  • Air bubble in propane line possibly. I always open and light the stove gas for a few minutes before turning on fridge.
  • It would HELP if you would give us MORE INFO. Brand name type of RV it's in. I'm taking a WAG by saying it needs cleaning (orvice)) JMO
