No worries, you'll learn as you go, most people do. Some don't - I've seen a few.
It would be very difficult to live without any inverter at all, both for a hard die minimalist or somebody with generator. You will need to charge the phone or laptop, use electric shaver or hair drier, watch TV or DVD and do other tasks that don't require a generator. The only thing that does require a generator is A/C, and, to certain degree - a microwave. Yes, I saw people running a diesel generator to watch a small TV that would hardly make a dent in 200-300 AH bank. I didn't ask them why because they didn't look somebody willing and able to answer. Maybe they only had one 80 AH battery, or didn't know what "inverter" was, who knows...
