In a situation such as this CLARITY of electrolyte in a hydrometer is a key point.
Charge the batteries until they bubble steadily. Continue for 15-minutes more.
Dip the cells. Clear bubbles are of no concern. Smoky tinted liquid is what you do not wish to see. If so much as one cell has smoky or red tint replace both batteries.
