Hummmmm

Last fall I had to replace the 120 volt side high limit switch pack on my water heater. At the same time I replaced the heating element and by passed the non working switch. Fast foreword to this morning. DW stepped into the shower and screamed there was no hot water. Switched to gas and it got hot really fast.
After breakfast I decided to do a little searching. So, gas off, and started taking things apart. Low and behold took the limit switch cover off to some smoke. Not good, but found a wire burned off the limit switch pack. No idea what happened except possibly the wire chaffed on the edge of the sheet metal. About 6 dollars and an hour of time and things are back to normal.

Area in draw pan where thermostats are located is just punched and edges rolled so they are sharp.

Wires come up behind draw pan to t-stats and can chaff against sharp edge. Doesn't take much to cut thru wire insulation and 120V AC (Black wire) makes contact with metal draw pan.
Typically it is the bottom one that chaffs against edge

Top t-stat is High Temp (resettable) (180*F)
Bottom t-stat is Normal Temp (130*F)

Same set up on right set...RED wires...but 12V DC for propane system
